Screen printing

What is screen printing?
Screen printing is one of the most proven printing methods in textile finishing and is a very good choice, especially for larger quantities. The method is particularly suitable for T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and cotton bags with clear designs, vibrant colors, and high durability.
The strengths of screen printing are especially evident when larger quantities are to be produced and the design consists of clearly separated colors. Due to the high opacity and even color application, very precise and durable printing results can be achieved.
When is screen printing sensible?
Screen printing is particularly worthwhile for:
- larger quantities
- designs with solid colors
- logos, lettering, and graphic designs
- printing projects with high durability and color intensity requirements
- textiles that are regularly worn, washed, or used in daily work
The higher the quantity, the more economical the process becomes. This is because technical preliminary work is necessary for screen printing, such as creating screens. These setup costs are spread over more products in larger quantities, thus reducing the unit price.
At Prinovia, the minimum quantity for screen printing is 50 pieces.
How does screen printing work?
In screen printing, the printing ink is applied directly to the textile using a stencil through a fine mesh screen. A separate screen is needed for each printing color. The colors are printed one after the other and then permanently fixed by heat.
The basic principle is simple: Each color of the design is prepared separately and applied individually to the textile. This creates a covering, even, and very durable print.
The most important steps at a glance:
- The design is broken down into its individual printing colors
- A separate screen is created for each color
- The colors are printed one after the other onto the textile
- Subsequently, the print is dried and fixed by heat
For colored textiles, a white undercoat is additionally used to achieve optimal opacity for the colors. This is automatically taken into account in the calculation.
What advantages does screen printing offer?
Screen printing is particularly strong when durability, color effect, and economy are important for larger quantities.
The most important advantages include:
- very good durability
- high wash resistance
- vibrant and opaque colors
- clean representation of solid areas
- economical for larger quantities
- special colors such as neon or metallic tones possible
- good suitability for workwear, team clothing, event textiles, and merchandise
Especially for designs with clear color areas, screen printing achieves very even and high-quality results.
For which designs is screen printing suitable?
Screen printing is best suited for:
- logos
- lettering
- designs with clearly separated colors
- graphic designs with solid areas
- larger color areas
- simple to medium-complex layouts
The clearer the colors are separated from each other, the better the design can be implemented in classic screen printing.
For more complex designs, there are additional special forms of screen printing:
- Half-tone printing for simple gradients and shades of gray
- Separation printing for photos, color gradients, and more elaborate designs
These variants are technically possible, but significantly more labor-intensive in preparation. Therefore, for smaller and medium quantities, digital printing is often the more sensible alternative for photorealistic or very complex designs.
Which colors are possible in screen printing?
In screen printing, the colors are mixed according to the Pantone system. This allows for very precise implementation of many shades. Special colors such as neon or metallic can also be realized depending on the design.
It is important: A separate screen is needed for each printing color. Therefore, the technical effort also increases with the number of printing colors.
Pantone colors can be implemented particularly color-accurately on white textiles. On colored textiles, the effect may vary slightly depending on the material and background.
If no specific Pantone values are provided, the color selection is based on the values in the print file.
Which quantities are sensible?
Screen printing is primarily intended for larger quantities. The greatest price advantage arises when the setup costs are spread over many products.
As a rough guideline:
- starting at 50 pieces possible
- especially economical from medium to larger quantities
- the simpler the design and the higher the quantity, the more attractive the process becomes
For small quantities or frequently changing designs, digital printing is often more flexible.
What printing sizes are possible?
The technically maximum standard printing size in screen printing is 35 x 40 cm. Larger printing areas can be possible depending on the product and design upon request.
However, it is important: In practice, it is often not the printing plate, but the respective textile itself that is the limiting factor.
To note, among other things:
- Children's shirts can only be printed from size 140 in about DIN A3
- for women's shirts in S and M, the printing height is often lower
- Hoodies cannot be printed over the front pocket
- Cotton bags also have limited maximum areas depending on the format
If different products are combined within an order, the printing size must be uniformly implementable. Especially with very small and very large textiles within the same order, this can be restrictive in practice.
What printing positions are possible?
In principle, various printing positions are possible in screen printing.
Typical printing areas on textiles are:
- Left chest
- Right chest
- Centered chest
- Centered back
- Neck emblem
- Hem at the bottom left, right, or centered
- Left or right sleeve
- Inside the neck area as an imprint
For bags, depending on the model, the front and back can be printed.
Which textiles are suitable for screen printing?
Screen printing is particularly well suited for textiles with a high cotton content. This includes, among others:
- T-shirts
- Polo shirts
- Sweatshirts
- Hoodies
- Fabric bags and cotton pouches
- many forms of work and team clothing
The method is particularly popular when robust, durable prints are required, for example, in workwear, event textiles, merchandise, or team clothing.
What requirements apply to the print file?
The requirements for the print file depend on the design.
For simple, single-color prints, a high-quality pixel graphic may often suffice. For multi-colored or more complex designs, a vector file is usually the better basis, as colors can be cleanly separated and technically prepared more precisely.
In general, it applies:
- for simple designs, high-quality pixel graphics are often sufficient
- for multi-colored designs, a vector file is recommended
- for gradients or complex designs, a clean print template is particularly important
- the better the file, the better the technical implementability
You can find detailed information on this in the section design requirements.
Are there also disadvantages or limitations?
Screen printing offers many advantages, but it is not automatically the best solution for every project.
To note:
- economical primarily for larger quantities
- a separate screen is required for each color
- with an increasing number of colors, the effort increases
- photos and gradients require half-tone printing or color separation
- for small quantities, digital printing is often more flexible
- printing sizes are not arbitrarily variable within an order
Especially for smaller quantities or very complex designs with many colors and gradients, another printing method may be better suited.
When is digital printing the better alternative?
Digital printing is often the more suitable choice when:
- smaller or medium quantities are needed
- the design contains many colors
- color gradients or photos are to be printed
- variable design sizes are needed within an order
- no classic screen positioning is sensible
Screen printing and digital printing therefore complement each other well. Which method fits better always depends on the design, quantity, and requirements.
